Key facts and metrics
Development: Commissioning of 30.58 km of completed road works.
Location: Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano Expressway, Kano State.
Project value: The government report identifies ₦252 billion as the estimated cost of Lot 1, covering 118 km. This is not the stated cost of the newly commissioned 30.58 km.
Client: Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Works.
Contractor: Not identified in the inspection announcement.
Status: 30.58 km commissioned on 21 October.
Scope: Pavement construction and rehabilitation, asphalt surfacing, drainage, road structures, streetlights, CCTV cameras and associated infrastructure.
What happened?
The Federal Government commissioned the completed section as part of efforts to finish outstanding works on the strategic northern transport corridor. The government said earlier works had encountered escalating costs and slow construction progress, resulting in termination of the previous contract.
The report also identifies continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) as a technology adopted on substantial portions of the expressway, alongside solar-powered streetlighting.
Why it matters
The corridor connects the Federal Capital Territory with major commercial and population centres in northern Nigeria. Better road conditions can support freight movement, agricultural distribution and access to markets, although the economic effect will depend on corridor-wide performance rather than one completed section alone.
Contractor and developer signal
Road contractors should monitor the remaining works and future procurement announcements along connected northern corridors.
Haulage operators and materials suppliers should distinguish completed sections from sections still under construction when estimating delivery times and transport costs.
Project owners should assess the maintenance implications of different pavement technologies rather than compare initial construction cost alone.
