What Happened

Dangote Petroleum Refinery raised its Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel, gantry price from ₦1,700 to ₦1,800 per litre, effective Saturday, 10 October 2026. The ₦100 adjustment represents a 5.88% increase.

The revision came three days after the refinery reduced its price from ₦1,780 to ₦1,700 per litre, effective 7 October. Earlier, on 1 October, the refinery had lowered its gantry price from ₦1,850 to ₦1,780 per litre.

The latest increase therefore reverses part of the relief introduced by the October reductions, although the revised price remains ₦50 below the 1 October rate of ₦1,850 per litre.

According to reports citing a customer notice from the refinery's Group Commercial Operations, customers were instructed to return affected Automated Truck Call-up documents for repricing. New volume contracts were to be issued to facilitate loading under the revised pricing structure.

The refinery's notice did not provide a specific reason for the increase.

Market Details: Gantry Prices Versus Depot Prices

The revised ₦1,800 rate applies to diesel supplied at the refinery's gantry. It should not be interpreted as a uniform price across independent depots or retail outlets.

A market report published by Legit.ng on 11 October cited depot prices ranging from ₦1,720 to ₦2,000 per litre, depending on the supplier. The report listed Dangote's depot price at ₦1,720 per litre, while Matrix quoted ₦2,000.

These figures illustrate the differences between reported supplier prices, but they do not represent a comprehensive nationwide survey. Purchase volumes, location, loading arrangements, transportation and other transaction terms can affect the final cost to buyers.

For construction businesses, the relevant figure is the delivered diesel cost at the project site, not necessarily the refinery's headline gantry price.

Why It Matters to Nigeria's Construction Industry

Diesel is an important operating input for construction activities that depend on generators, earthmoving equipment, batching plants, trucks and other fuel-powered machinery.

A higher procurement price can increase expenditure where diesel consumption is substantial. The actual effect on a project, however, depends on its fuel consumption, equipment efficiency, operating hours, supply arrangements and the extent to which the revised rate is reflected in delivered prices.

The rapid sequence of price changes also makes it important for contractors to distinguish temporary market movements from sustained changes in operating costs.

Impact on Contractors

Equipment operating costs: Contractors running excavators, bulldozers, graders, cranes and diesel-powered generators should assess the effect of the new supplier rate against actual consumption records and current purchase invoices.

Material haulage: Transport operators may face higher fuel acquisition costs. Whether these translate into higher charges for moving sand, granite, reinforcement steel and other materials depends on transport contracts, route costs and supplier pricing decisions.

Tender pricing: Contractors preparing new bids should use dated fuel quotations and document the assumptions behind equipment and haulage rates. A single gantry-price announcement is not sufficient evidence for applying a uniform increase across all project costs.

Impact on Developers and Project Owners

Bills of quantities and cost forecasts: Project owners should review fuel-sensitive work packages where diesel is a significant operating expense. Updated supplier quotations can help determine whether forecast costs remain realistic.

Fixed-price contracts: A fuel-price increase does not automatically entitle a contractor to a variation. Any adjustment depends on the contract's escalation provisions, risk allocation and applicable terms.

Project delivery: Diesel-price volatility may affect procurement decisions and operating budgets, but the available reporting does not establish that the latest increase has caused construction delays.

Nomarc Market Signal

The movement from ₦1,700 to ₦1,800 per litre demonstrates how quickly a temporary reduction in fuel costs can be reversed. For construction businesses, the more useful indicator is the delivered cost of diesel over time, measured alongside consumption and equipment utilisation.

Nomarc should track refinery gantry prices, independent depot quotations and site-delivered rates separately. A dated dataset would help contractors and quantity surveyors distinguish upstream price changes from distribution costs and assess their actual effect on project budgets.

The latest adjustment alone does not justify recommending a blanket 10–15% fuel contingency for every construction project. Contingencies should reflect the project's fuel exposure, contract terms, procurement conditions and risk assessment.
