The Federal Government plans to reopen the First Niger Bridge linking Onitsha, Anambra State, and Asaba, Delta State, today, September 21, 2026, after a two-week emergency rehabilitation.
The bridge was closed to traffic from September 7 to September 21 to allow rehabilitation works to be carried out on sections of the bridge and adjoining carriageway.
Rehabilitation Works
The intervention includes the removal and replacement of deteriorated asphalt, with approximately 40mm of asphalt wearing course being installed.
Other works include repairs to sections of the bridge's expansion-joint steelwork and steel-truss fittings, alongside the installation of solar-powered streetlights and CCTV cameras.
The works were assigned to SKECC, the contractor responsible for the Km 0+000–Km 20+000 section of the Onitsha–Enugu Dual Carriageway.
Traffic Diversion
During the closure, motorists travelling between Onitsha and Asaba were diverted through the Second Niger Bridge, with traffic directed via Obosi towards Asaba.
The diversion allowed rehabilitation activities to proceed while maintaining an alternative crossing for road users.
Reopening
The September 21 reopening date represents the Federal Government's scheduled completion target for the emergency intervention. Final confirmation of the bridge's reopening and the restoration of normal traffic operations remains subject to the completion and clearance of the works.
